La Statue de la Liberté, Cadeau de la France
En 1863, un dîner réunit à Paris plusieurs invités dont deux personnes de l’association Amitié Franco Américaine : Mr de Laboulaye, professeur de droit, et le sculpteur Bartholdi. Tous deux discutent d’une idée de statue que l’on pourrait offrir aux Etats-Unis d’Amérique. Ces deux personnages trouveront, beaucoup plus tard, plusieurs raisons à ce projet : Ils veulent d’abord célébrer la Déclaration d’Indépendance du pays de 1776, puis insister sur l’admiration des français envers cette jeune démocratie qui a aboli l’esclavage et réuni le Nord et le Sud en mettant fin à une guerre fratricide. Pour tout dire, Laboulaye, ardent républicain, souhaite aussi montrer indirectement à l’Empereur Napoléon III qu’il est temps pour lui de laisser la place à une république. Ainsi va apparaitre, peu à peu, Madame Liberté, dont la création, le voyage puis l’installation donnent lieu à une suite d’aventures. Nous verrons à quel point la Statue, si bien positionnée, a symbolisé pour les vagues successives d`immigrants, l’espoir d`une nouvelle vie.
The Statue of Liberty, a Present from France
In 1863, a dinner in Paris brought together several guests, including two members of the Franco-American Friendship Association: Mr. de Laboulaye, a law professor, and the sculptor Bartholdi. They discussed the idea of a statue that could be presented to the United States of America. Much later, these two men would find several reasons for this project: they wanted first to celebrate the country's Declaration of Independence of 1776, and then to emphasize the French people's admiration for this young democracy that had abolished slavery and united the North and South by ending a fratricidal war. In short, Laboulaye, a fervent republican, also wished to indirectly show Emperor Napoleon III that it was time for him to give way to a republic. Thus, little by little, Madame Liberty came into being, whose creation, journey, and installation gave rise to a series of adventures. We will see to what extent the Statue, so well positioned, symbolized for successive waves of immigrants the hope of a new life.
